What is the best tent for a Subaru Outback and how do I mount it?
Subaru Outbacks give us a little challenge due to their funkier stock roof racks.
However, you can ignore this article if you have an Outback Wilderness, you can follow our standard advice!
The good news is that the stock roof racks will work and upgrading the crossbars is not necessary to mount our tents. The trick is that the crossbars are quite close to the roof of the vehicle which makes tightening up the installation hardware somewhat more difficult than a normal rack.
If you go for the Condor tent, you have nothing to worry about. The mounting rails on those tents are not in-set, so they give you about an extra inch of working space in order to tighten up the hardware. As far as mounting a Sparrow, you will want to order some of this rubber gasket. You can lay this across the crossbar's width and it will raise the tent up slightly so that you can get your hands underneath.
Keep in mind that the stock Outback rack has a max capacity of 150 lbs. That is too low for a few of our tents models so watch the specs to make sure you are not over the weight limit.
As for tent recommendations- we suggest sticking to the Condor, Sparrow, or Meadowlark. The XL tents are too large for both the roof of the Outback as well as the rack.
