What is the best tent for a 4Runner and what do I need to mount it?
The 4Runner is actually our most popular customer vehicle- so we are well-versed in what works best.
First things first, your stock crossbars will not work. They are too close to the roof of the vehicle to allow you to tighten the hardware underneath. You will need an aftermarket set of crossbars or a platform rack in order to mount up a tent. We always suggest crossbars as they are plenty strong for installation and much easier and cheaper to deal with than a platform rack.
Check out www.etrailer.com for some crossbar options. You can enter your 4Runners year, make, and model and it will show you all compatible options. Yakima, Thule, and Rhino Rack are the major players. For more information on selecting the right bars, check out this page.
As for tent choice, the most popular is the Falcon 3 Evo. It is super low-profile, ultra-durable, and looks sharp. Check out our Instagram @roofnest for lots of photos of that combination. You can also jump over to our FB group, the Roofnest Flock, for more. The Condor 2 is also a popular choice.
While the Falcon XL will work, many find the extra width and subsequent overhang a little too much for the 4Runner, so most customers go with the normal size Falcon 3. The regular size Condor and Sparrow also work great!
